Located at a distance of 15 Kms from Kottayam District in Kerala, Vembanad Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Asia. With lush green surroundings and flourished vegetation, it is a famous picnic destination for local people as well as to foreigners.
Since the lake occupies a large portion of Kerala backwaters, the lake is rich in aquatic life and is an ideal destination to migratory birds. The most fascinating idea of enjoying the scenic beauty is to take a houseboat cruise across the lake where you can observe the village life of the people.
If you love birds, it is the best place to visit. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is spread over an area of 14 acres on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Here, you can watch range of migratory birds. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between June to August and to watch migratory birds, suitable time is between November to February.
