Hawa Mahal is an important landmark of Jaipur city. This Mahal is an integral part of City Palace but it is situated opposite to the Palace. It is an elevated façade in pyramidal shape built in 1799 by the poet King Sawai Pratap Singh in architectural expertise of Mr. Lal Chand Usta.
Hawa Mahal or the Palace of winds is a complex and outstanding five storied structure that exhibit the striking Rajput architecture. This construction is fifty-five foot high and less than a foot in thickness. It is an extension of the Zenana (women's chamber) of the City Palace. The structure is constructed with red and pink sandstones with white boarders and motifs that look very graceful.Palace of winds has 953 pink sandstones windows known as ‘jharokhas’ and built in such a manner that it looks like a giant honey comb. This palace is especially constructed for the women of the court to maintain the tradition for women to stay covered with veil and not to be seen from outside. Women can view the royal procession, colourful marketplace and daily happenings outside through these latticed windows. These small windows also drags in air and acts like an air filter making the palace environ cool even in the month of June, July which is the peak hot season in Jaipur.
Here one can visit a small archeological museum and if one likes to see more spectacular view of Hawa Mahal, the right time would be the time of sun rise as the morning golden rays when falls on the wall gives a marvelous look to the structure. |
