Golconda Fort – A Symbol of Architectural Magnificence

Golconda fort is a magnificent establishment situated at a distance of 11 Km on the western outskirt of Hyderabad. This great cultural heritage milieu though on the verge of decay speaks the volume of architectural proficiency of artisans and majestic ruling strategy of then rulers.

History of Golconda Fort

Build on 1525, this massive structure has very interesting story behind its establishment. During the reign of Kakatiya's in the 13th century, a young shepherd spotted an idol in one of the hill called Mangalavaram. When king heard this news, he ordered to build a clay fort around that holy spot. This spot later renovated and expanded around an area of 5 Kms by the first three Quli Qutub Shahi kings, who consecutively ruled the Deccan for 62 years.

Architectural Splendor

The most fascinating fact about the complete architecture is its magical acoustic system. The sound of a hand clap at any point below the dome is reverberates and heard with same clarity at the Bala Hissar, which is the highest point of the fort and almost a kilometer away.

It is so prominent that the whole architecture is done with perfect planning as the architectural grandeur can be estimated by viewing beautiful palaces, and ingenious water supply system. One can see the famous 'Rahban' cannon that was used during the last seize of Golconda by Aurangazeb.

The beauty of the fort is enhanced by intricate designs done in the ventilations of the fort. It is designed as such to let the cool breeze flow into the fort and provide respite to the inhabitants from scorching summer temperature.

As a protection to the fort, 11 Km long outer wall is constructed with huge Iron Gate with pointed spikes in order to prevent Elephant from damaging the fort.

Other Attractions

Fort was said to be famous for diamond trade and there is also a speculation about the origination of Kohinoor diamond here. As one travel from Hyderabad to Golconda, the long stretched road is occupied by number of shops that are famous for jewelry like diamond, pearl and other gems.

Visitors can enjoy the light and sound show. Presented in Hindi, English and Telugu, the show unravels the history of Golconda, the valor and majesty of then rulers. You must add this show in must watch list while visiting Golconda fort if you love to experience the glorious past of the fort. In winter season (November to February), show starts at 6.30 PM and in summer (March to October), show starts at 7 PM.

Reaching to Golconda is feasible by all means of transport as the Hyderabad is well connected by airways, railways and roadways. People can travel to Golconda by small Taxi, Van other than luxury and semi-luxury buses, which is 11 Kms away from Hyderabad.
