Fatehpur Sikri is the majestic city build-up by the Emperor Akbar to commemorate the birth of his Son Salim, later turned to Jehangir. Fatehpur Sikri is located at a distance of 39 Km from Agra and people across the world throng to the place to view the intricate beauty and outstanding architectural proficiency of then Mughal artisans.

History of Fatehpur Sikri says that Akbar has no son to heir his throne, so he went to Sufi saint Sheik Salim Chisti to seek his blessings and he foretold that Akbar will be blessed with a son and positively it happened and Akbar ordered to build a city to mark his birth and he also build a beautiful mosque and a tomb inside to honor the saint Sheik Salim Chisti.

Fatehpur Sikri is considered one of the greatest accomplishment and most elegant establishment that took place in Akbar’s reign. But unfortunately, he ran his court from there for not more than 10 years since it was lately realized that there is no adequate water supply, hence the city has to be abandoned.

Other important monuments in Fatehpur Sikri are Panch mahal, Buland Darwaza, a prayer hall for new religion founded by Akbar called Din-i-Illahi, halls for public and private audiences called Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas and ingenious Dargah of Sheik Salim Chisti in white marble.

Panch Mahal or the five story pavilion is an airy pyramidal structure that ended to a single kiosk that provides magnificent view of the city and its surroundings. It has been said that carved lattice screens of the Panch Mahal was made as such that women inside can view the happenings outside but outsiders was unable to view them.

Buland Darwaza is 176 feet high and is one of the highest gateways in India and ranks among the biggest in the world. This gateway is constructed in 1602 AD to mark Akbar’s victory over rulers of Gujarat.

Dargah of Sheik Salim Chisti was constructed in 1570 to honor Saint Salim Chisti. It was believed that when Akbar made a pilgrimage to this place, he was blessed with three sons. In retrospection, childless women usually come to this place with a hope of getting blessed. Excellent lattice work found in the Dargah is believed to be among the finest found any where in India.
