Agra Fort |

The city of Agra is well known for mausoleum Taj Mahal but if you visit Agra City in the State of Uttar Pradesh which is almost 200Km away from Delhi, there are many other attractive places to visit other than Taj Mahal that sings the glory of Mughal architecture and prosperity of their empire.
Agra fort which is located on the bank of Yamuna River and occupied an area 0f 2.5 acres is a majestic palatial structure whose foundation was laid down by Emperor Akbar the Great. Construction process carried out for two generations and was ultimately completed on 1605 during the time of grandson Shah Jehan.
Fort is surrounded by wall made with red sandstone and inside the wall stood several buildings constructed with interest of son and grandson of Akbar and each having its own importance. There are two entrances namely Delhi Gate and Amar Singh Gate and as of now public are allowed to enter only through the latter one.
Once inside, anyone can sense the magnificent architectural expertise of then Mughal artisans in each paintings, carvings and inscriptions. Some part of the fort is not accessible and are used and protected by Indian Army however, public are allowed to visit southern part of the fort which almost covers the buildings of tourist interest.
Right hand side after the entrance stood the Jehagiri Mahal that usually in-housed the women of the court. Ahead of this lies the stone pool and the resources revealed that this pool used to be flooded with rose petals during the time of Noor Jehan as she loved to take bath with its fragrance. There lies a beautiful garden called Anguri Bagh or the Grape garden with flowing water, flowers and hanging jewels. The building Diwan-I-Am or the hall of public audience was constructed by Shah Jehan to address the general public and nobility. It has the heavily decorated Golden Peacock Throne and emperor used to sit there while hearing his subjects. The building is constructed with red sandstones but is plastered with white shell plaster to resemble white marble.
Next stood the Khas Mahal which has two golden pavilions and was the bedroom of the Princes Jahanara and Roshanara. To the left is Mussaman Burj which is believed to be emperor’s room that faces the Taj Mahal. Internet resources have revealed that Shah Jehan was imprisoned by in that room and he used to gaze to the Taj Mahal thoroughly until his death. Apart from this, there is Shesh Mahal, Mina Masjid and Nagina Masjid (masjid of women of the court). |
