All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) is a residential University which is started with an aim to facilitate medical education and research to bring standard medical education in India. This institute conducts Undergraduate and Post graduate courses, runs college of nursing and provides patient care.
AIIMS has made several differences in the field of medical education and research and its most valued achievement is the first cardiac transplant in India on August 3rd 1994. Statistics provided on the Internet have revealed that AIIMS conducts research on 42 different disciplines and it is considered as a leading research institute as it provides more than 600 research publication annually.
In terms of patient care, AIIMS includes 25 clinical departments and four super specialty centers that handle almost all types of cases excluding burn, dog bite and some infectious diseases in support from Para-Clinical Departments. In addition to main institute, AIIMS also runs a 60 bedded hospital as a Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at Ballabgarh in Haryana and provides healthcare treatment to around 2.5 lakh people annually through the Centre for Community Medicine.
